The Anatomy of an Affair project represents a body of work spanning over 8 years of effort across 5 main artistic modes: Musical Composition, Songwriting, Poetry, Prose, and Graphic Design. After the 7 years of studio recording the 80 songs and recitations put to music, contracting with sketch artist illustrators and building the book design for each page began.

Every Page Has a Sound

Music

The 40 singer/songwriter recordings were accomplished over seven years in 3 different studio settings; utilizing nearly 40 collaborating musicians across 4 different producers. The first studio session was in Florida in July of 2009 and the last wrapped in Pennsylvania in 2016. This represents 2 hours, 40 minutes, and 50 seconds of song. Work on prioritizing the accompanying poetry and creating the timeline between poetry and song, ongoing since inception, began in earnest during the Spring of 2017.

After months of rehearsals, by October of 2017 recitation recordings were shipped out for professional mix and mastering to equalize an audio experience between the genres. In addition, meditational instrumental versions for the song audios were melded into the poetry recitations. These recitations total 1 hour and 20 minutes of blended music and poetry. The meditational music alone track spans 1:20:00 in length.

From the Man Behind the Book

Like life and romance, there is a certain volatility and imperfection in many parts inside this book and associated audios. I struggled with pruning nearly 120 works down to just 40 songs and 40 poems on this theme. And as an older man now than when I wrote many of them, I am anxious at times with a feeling of embarrassment over a few moments herein from my past that betray a puerile naiveté. But art without sacrifice is often reduced without it. Discretion may require creative use of mystery, silence, or absence. Yet, now in Anatomy of an Affair after spending many years recording the songs and poems set to music, by creating a visual as well I’ve finally achieved something approaching a whole about it. And my work in striking a balance between adding something for each work without ruining a creative listener’s own interpretation, I believe, has been worth it. To assemble a visual aspect to each work was harder than I expected, and I hope you enjoy my discomfort and/or that it rekindles a fond memory of your own in retrospect.
